The Benefits of CBD Oil for Your Dog

People are passionate about their dogs. They strive to give their furry family members the best care they can. This is especially true when deciding what kind of medicine to give them when they suffer pain daily. The leading trend these days is cannabidoil (CBD) oil for dogs. Here are some facts about this homeopathic medicine.

Background

CBD is a compound found in cannabis. This compound is derived from hemp, and therefore does not contain delta-9-tetrahydrocannainol, or THC, that gives marijuana psychoactive properties. Cannabinoids interact with receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems of dogs, which helps them maintain a balanced, healthy body. People who use CBD oil on their dogs report that the compound is excellent at treating neuropathic pain and helps control seizures. CBD oil for dogs can also help treat inflammation, nausea and anxiety, stimulate appetite, and might be beneficial to the heart and have anti-cancer properties. However, all evidence is anecdotal and data is inconclusive. The Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is conducting a study at the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to evaluate the use of CBD oil in treatment-resistant dogs with epilepsy.

Side Effects and Risks

There are 3 main side effects dog owners need to look out for when giving doses of CBD oil to their dogs. These are based on the way CBD oil effects humans, as there isn’t any scientific data on this for dogs yet. There may be a decrease in the production of saliva. Dogs might express this by becoming excessively thirsty. CBD oil, when used in high doses, can cause blood pressure to drop slightly for a brief period, causing light–headedness in dogs. Higher doses, typically used to tread anxiety, has a calming effect that may cause some drowsiness. People need to be cautious when giving their dogs CBD because the safety of risks have not been researched and the medicine has not been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). There is no dosing chart, and no one knows what size dose could be toxic. The best course of action when giving your dog CBD oil, especially for the first time, is to start with a small amount and carefully monitor the results.

Available CBD Products

People who are interested in getting CBD for their dogs should talk to their veterinarian first. When shopping for CBD oil for dogs, make sure the product is organic and doesn’t contain pesticides, fungicides, or solvents. Make sure the manufacturer provides a certificate that gives the amount of CBD in the product, and little to no THC. Don’t buy cheaper options, which will have toxic additives and heavy metals. The best form to buy CBD is as a tincture, in which doses can be measured by the drop.
